Internet2 is seeking a creative, collaborative, and resourceful professional with a strong background in communications and writing to contribute to the creation, coordination, and execution of internal and external communications for Internet2 services and programs. This is a critical role to effectively promote and position the Internet2 community as leaders in cloud-based services, identity and security services, and related technologies and programs within the overall mission of Internet2.The communications specialist role is part of the marketing team under the Internet2 Community Engagement division, and includes a senior communications specialist and content marketing copywriter. This position works with internal stakeholders, Internet2 members, and InCommon participant organizations, including higher education, state and national research and education networks, government organizations, non-profit organizations, technology industry, and international partners. The ideal candidate is a relationship-builder and strong collaborator who is a self-starter and proactively brings new ideas to the table and finds a path to execution.This position will be tasked with translating technical initiatives for cloud-based services and identity and security services into compelling story ideas and communications campaigns to drive awareness and adoption of programs and initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in writing, editing, and producing a comprehensive range of communication materials as well as have hands-on experience designing, executing, and implementing communications campaigns.This position collaborates with the marketing and digital experience teams to support marketing campaigns focused on positioning Internet2’s value proposition for identity and security services, cloud-based services, and related technologies and programs. The ideal candidate is a collaborator who seeks to understand complex and technical content with the ability to produce external-facing material that translates that content to various audiences within the research and education community. The Communications Specialist is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Communications and can be based nationwide. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work remotely. Travel several times per year is expected for internal team meetings and to attend in-person events. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Creation, delivery, and execution of marketing campaigns for priority identity, security, and cloud-based services and programs in support of programmatic goals and priorities.
Development of strategic messaging including proofreading, editing, and drafting communication email communications, newsletters, materials, fact sheets, and executive thought leadership pieces.
Write a variety of comprehensive materials for stylistic consistency, voice, and tone.
Partner with content contributors to ensure content is timely, accurate, clear, actionable and fits brand and writing style guidelines.
Plan, develop, write and edit public-facing materials for a variety of external audiences, including blogs, editorials, abstracts, newsletters, web content, fact sheets, collateral, and technical briefs.
Proactively and collaboratively work with marketing, digital experience, and events teams within the larger Community Engagement division.
Collaborate with external marketing agencies to support project initiatives and ensure alignment with internal stakeholders.
Coordinate web content updates across the InCommon and Internet2 websites.
Identify and strategize public relations opportunities as part of broader marketing and communications campaigns.
Create and update content for slide decks using a branded PowerPoint presentation.
Participate in regular stakeholder meetings, team meetings, and larger staff meetings.
Perform additional communications tasks as needed or as assigned, including virtual event and engagement support, and onsite support for in-person Internet2 events.
Stay abreast of relevant issues, trends, and industry insights.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in marketing, journalism, communications, public relations, or related field.
5+ years in editing, writing and verbal communications skills.
2+ years experience in translating complex and/or technical concepts into consumable information.
Ability to communicate and interact with subject matter experts from different functional areas.
Comfortable working with cross-functional teams and project managing their own workload to set deadlines and deliver high-quality work on time.
Ability to effectively prioritize and work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to be flexible, agile, and shift to changing conditions or organizational strategic priorities.
Ability to work well as both a self-starter and team member.
Highly organized and detail-oriented.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organization skills.
