About the Role
Compute is a key lever for OpenAI and AI progress. This hire will manage investments in compute and infrastructure for our industry leading AI research and products. You will be responsible for defining and driving key investment decisions, managing ongoing infrastructure costs, and ensuring we are maximizing return on our infrastructure investments. This is a cross-functional and strategic role, working closely with engineers, research scientists, and external partners. This is an individual contributor role.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Develop and maintain OpenAI’s compute roadmap, working closely with leadership, technical experts and key external partners
Financially assess investments, build models, and make thoughtful recommendations that are ambitious but achievable
Lead negotiations with key vendors and partners
Manage ongoing compute and infrastructure spend, identify areas for improvement/efficiency, and partner with stakeholders to execute on opportunities
Establish key compute efficiency metrics across AI research and product, and regularly monitor, analyze, and report on these metrics to drive improvement
Serve as a partner to FP&A and strategic finance teams, aligning compute and infrastructure with broader financial and business strategies
Create high-quality Exec and Board-facing presentations
Stay abreast of market trends and competitive dynamics to inform and improve our infrastructure strategy
Collaborate with engineering, product, research, and security teams to align compute plans with internal roadmaps
You might thrive in this role if you have:
7+ years of experience across strategic finance, business operations, venture capital, private / growth equity, private credit, investment banking, consulting, strategic finance, corporate development, strategy & operations, and/or business development
Experience with project finance, capital project and infrastructure financial analysis, and large-scale, high dollar investment projects
Knowledge of physical computing infrastructure: power and space, data center facilities, hardware, and networking
Exceptionally strong analytical, financial modeling, and written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated track record of thoughtful investment decisions
Experience driving operational outcomes under ambitious deadlines
Exceptionally strong relationship building, business judgment, and communication skills
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
