Position Summary


Decision Information Resources (DIR), a subcontractor to Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., is seeking self-motivated, outgoing individuals to collect data in schools for the 2024-2025 National School Foods Study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). Data collection will include cafeteria observations and computer-assisted (CAPI) staff interviews about school meal costs. As a Field Interviewer, you will play a crucial role in collecting data that will help provide a comprehensive picture of school-based nutrition programs, including nutritional quality and cost of school meals and changes in food purchase practices.

We are seeking candidates who reside in the Southeastern, Southwestern, and Western regions of the U.S. and are available for out-of-town travel for up to a week at a time. Travel to various school districts within a designated region is required, with work hours aligning with school hours, typically from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM local time.In-person data collection in schools will take place from January through June 2025, the position requires a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours as the work increases. Attendance at and successful completion of a 5-day training session, including passing a certification assessment, is required to begin data collection.

The training will be held in Princeton, NJ from January 8 - 12, 2025, and all travel expenses will be covered by the company. 

Key Responsibilities


In-Person Data Collection


  • Travel to assigned school districts nationwide to collect data using standardized observation and interview protocols.
  • Conduct structured interviews and surveys with school food service directors, cafeteria managers, kitchen staff, and other relevant personnel.
  • Ensure that all interviews and surveys are conducted according to the study’s protocols and that responses are accurately recorded.
  • Accurately enter collected data into the designated digital and/or paper-based systems.
  • Ensure timely submission of all collected data, adhering to the study’s reporting schedule.
  • Maintain organized records of all data collection activities and related documents.
  • Maintain confidentiality of project and participant information.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and other tasks related to data collection.

Travel Requirements


  • Travel extensively to various school districts in a designated region, sometimes to remote or rural areas.
  • Availability for out-of-town travel for up to one week at a time. 
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard hours when necessary, including early mornings.

Training and Certification


  • Participate in a mandatory 5-day training session (including travel) in Princeton, NJ from January 8 - 12, 2025, with all travel expenses covered by the company.
  • Pass a certification assessment at the end of the training, demonstrating proficiency in the study’s data collection methods and instruments.
  • Engage in ongoing training and support as provided by the project team, including periodic quality control checks.

Qualifications


  • Experience conducting interviews or surveys, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working in a school setting. 
  • Experience in data collection, fieldwork, or research focused on education and/or nutrition is desirable.
  • Ability to travel extensively, as required by the project.
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass required background checks.

Work Environment


  • This role involves working in schools in diverse communities.
  • The position requires significant travel, which may include overnight stays and visits to multiple locations within a short timeframe.
