Senior Scientist, Field Applications Support

 We are now entering the century of biology and genomics is at the heart of the next revolution.  Become part of the new paradigm in gene sequencing and help shape the future of genomic study by joining the PacBio team.PacBio is seeking a Field Applications Specialist with a strong customer focus to support the installation, training, validation, and implementation for customers, distributors, and collaborators using SMRT sequencing technology with the PacBio instrument.  The successful candidate will be responsible for training distributors and customers, methods development, execution of pilot and customer support projects.

In addition, the ability to communicate with customers both pre and post sales, interact with marketing, internal support and development and communicate results to diverse audiences are important aspects of this role. This individual will be working in a fast-paced commercial environment, interacting with customers, as well as other scientists and engineers from a wide variety of backgrounds. This individual is a partner to the customer and distributors in the understanding and analysis of data derived through the use of our 3rd generation high throughput sequencing system. The position is field based and located in China. Responsibilities: 

  • Provide high quality scientific and applications support to customers in China to ensure successful use of PacBio's sequencing instruments. 
  • Deliver effective trainings to enable new users and ensure adoption and implementation of the technology in routine lab work.
  • Help customers to implement new and specific applications.
  • Assist customers in designing and conducting experiments.
  • Perform troubleshooting and employ customer management skills to effectively resolve technical challenges and maintain confidence.
  • Contribute to account planning and management as part of local commercial team and in line with a regional strategy.
  • Ensure successful completion of key consumables projects and pilot studies to help drive sales.
  • Provide best in class support to key account users to become highly proficient in performing HiFi sequencing workflow and its applications.
  • Deliver high quality presentations of SMRT sequencing technology and its applications to external audiences in a competitive environment.
  • Communicate and coordinate work in a cross functional manner to ensure successful completion of beta tests and implement early access programs of new products and protocols.
  • Travel 50% of the time or more, with occasional visits to headquarters in California.
  • Hands-on laboratory work preparing samples and running the PacBio instrument to execute experiments for collaboration and application development projects.
  • Support development of technical documentation and training materials.
  • Customer minded individual with the empathy to understand customer concerns.
  • Team player who can effectively integrate internal and field-based activities across functions to support internal teams.
  • Keep track of technical and customers’ issues by means of logging cases in CRM and work towards resolution in the most efficient and effective manner.

Required Qualifications:

  • Normally requires a PhD in a scientific discipline and a minimum of 2-5 years related experience; may include post-doctoral experience.  Alternatively, Masters in a scientific discipline with minimum of 5-8 years of related experience, or a B.S. in a scientific discipline with 7-10 years of related experience.
  • A degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field.
  • Technical proficiency in general laboratory practices, biochemistry/molecular biology, including library construction and operation of molecular biology instrumentation and next generation sequencing platforms.
  • Excellent record-keeping and careful attention to detail.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including team collaboration, presentation, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to balance several projects and customers concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
  • Must have excellent work ethic, exceptional judgement and unquestionable integrity.
  • Proficient in Chinese and English.
  • Ability and willingness travel up to 50%.

Preferred experience:

  • PacBio experience is strongly preferred
  • Familiar and used to working through CRM tools would be a benefit
