Software Engineer, Backend

ecobeeLeeds, United KingdomRemote, Onsite

Hi, we are ecobee.

ecobee introduced the world’s first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution. In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems.

Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.

Why we love to do what we do:

We’re helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact on the planet. Our products and services work in harmony to provide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we’re proud of what we’ve done so far, there’s still a lot we can do—and you can be part of it.

Join our extraordinary team.

We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with a satellite office in Leeds, UK (and remote ecopeeps in the US). We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We’re always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.

Who you'll be joining:

The ecobee Smart Security service, launched in 2020 to rave reviews, is the intelligent solution that protects home and families.  Our system uses machine learning and advanced sensor technology to protect our customers most precious asset – their home.  This is just the beginning!  We’re embarking on a journey to combine our Energy and Security products to create industry leading, world class features to create safer and greener homes. Join us to help make ecobee the best eco-friendly smart security product on the planet. Working as part of our Smart Security Camera team, you’ll play a pivotal role within our UK-based engineering function, both delivering knockout features and maintaining existing systems and platforms.

You’ll be working across a large part of the Camera tech stack, from cloud services written primarily in Python to on-device code implemented in Golang (although it’d be great if you had experience here, we’re also welcome to hearing from candidates who are eager to learn on the job). Some of the highlights of things you’ll be involved with include building cutting-edge AI-driven algorithms for object detection and designing power-optimized algorithms for our next-gen devices. The engineering teams believe strongly in operational excellence – taking ownership of the services and systems they build right through to production. From monitoring, troubleshooting and optimizing the services running in GCP to analysing real-time fleet metrics from tens of thousands of real-world home security devices.  As part of a large, globally distributed engineering function you’ll have regular opportunity to interface with teams working on other parts of the ecobee product range – from subscription services to energy products and mobile apps.  You’ll benefit from regular learning days (with lots of smart people around to inspire your upskilling choices!), a dedicated learning and development budget, an annual (optional) trip to Toronto for our TechConnect conference, as well as other opportunities for growth and development!

Technologies we use:

  • Golang, Python
  • Apollo GraphQL
  • GitHub Actions (CI/CD), CircleCI
  • Google Cloud, GKE, CloudSQL, PubSub, Cloud Run, DataStore, BigQuery, Dataflow, etc.
  • Terraform

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Deliver robust software as cloud services in GCP and on distributed IoT devices
  • Work with best practice – help keep our engineering standard high
  • Helpmentor more junior engineers, supporting their journey to becoming superstar individual contributors
  • Contribute to key architectural design decisions for our next generation devices

What you bring to the table:

We've built the below list as a guideline for some of the skills and interests of our development team - but we strive to build our team with members from a diverse background and skill set, so if any combination of these apply to you, we'd love to chat!

  • Familiarity with crafting production code in object-oriented Python. Experience in Golang would be nice, or a strong desire to learn it on the job
  • Excellent ability to balance technical excellence with getting stuff done – you’re not fazed by pressure to deliver and know when and where tradeoffs should be made (and when they shouldn’t)
  • A great team player and proactive communicator – being part of a large engineering function, you’ll regularly be working with peers in other teams
  • Strong experience with GCP, AWS or Azure
  • You enjoy finding better and faster way to solve complex problems, even if it means challenging the status quo
  • You love to be challenged and are fearless in diving into issues with a high degree of uncertainty attached in areas such as scale, redundancy, performance optimisation and concurrency
  • Embrace running a production environment as well as building it. You’ll be responsible for getting your code live and monitoring the services that you (and others) have created, responding to incidents, and generally making sure the team builds software that is robust, resilient and observable

Just so you know:

The hired candidate will be required to complete a background check
