We have a Lead Electrical Design Engineer position available in our Biddeford, ME office. This person will lead protection and control design projects within substations, power plants, and switchgear. Performing and directing all aspects of electrical design including, but not limited to, protective relaying, circuit breakers, transformers, PLC’s, HMI’s, network architecture, and SCADA. This person will also oversee other staff engineers during project efforts. The ideal candidate must have a diverse skill set with the ability to work independently.
Will act as technical lead on projects and guide lower-level engineers/technicians.
Major Responsibilities:
This position requires the Lead Electrical Design Engineer to provide engineering services for utility substations and generation stations. Responsibilities include:
- Design and oversee the development of electrical systems for substations, power plants, and switchgear upgrades, incorporating advanced knowledge of protective relays and control systems IEC-61850 knowledge and experience is preferred
- Lead project planning, design, specification, and implementation phases, ensuring projects are completed within scope, time, and budget constraints
- Develop and implement strategies for integrating SCADA, HMI, and PLC systems with electrical power systems, ensuring robust, reliable, and user-friendly operation
- Programming of protective relays to implement protection setpoints, custom control logic, and remote communications
- Setup and execution of Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT’s) with clients
- Prepare comprehensive project documentation, including design drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers and design staff, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous learning within the team
- Act as the primary technical contact for clients, contractors, and suppliers, managing expectations and resolving any technical issues that arise
- Keep abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory changes, incorporating innovative solutions into design practices
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with customers, lead project meetings, and provide scheduling and meet the financial requirements of clients
- Assists in the development of estimates for client proposals
Requirements
Education – A bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, or engineering technology) is required. BSEE or BSEET from an accredited institution is preferred.Experience 5-10 years with capabilities in the below areas is preferred:
- In-depth understanding of three-phase power systems and associated equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, batteries and chargers, transfer switches, relaying, metering, etc.
- In-depth experience with AutoCAD
- In-depth understanding of standard electrical drawing packages. Elevation drawings, one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC control elementaries, wiring diagrams, etc.
- In-depth understating of protective relaying and control scheme implementation. Key protective relay vendors are SEL, GE, Beckwith, Basler, Alstom
- In-depth understanding of automation data concentrators. Primarily the SEL-RTAC
- Experience with rotating machinery, including motors, generators, and excitation systems
- Experience with SCADA, RTU, and DFR systems
- Knowledge or experience with IEC-61850
- Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver’s license

On-site environment could require work in various temperature conditions; in and/or around moisture, on slippery and/or uneven surfaces, in confined spaces, and at heights; will require frequent standing, driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and occasional bending, squatting, climbing, twisting, balancing, and reaching; will have exposure to noise, vibrations and chemicals.
