Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About this Role:
As an Electromechanical Technician Lead, you will work on a multitude of projects in a fast-paced, highly dynamic workplace. The ability to prioritize and manage your time, attention to detail, and a knack for understanding complex electromechanical systems are all important in this role. You will use your strong organizational and planning skills to efficiently allocate resources and streamline workflows. We are looking for someone who can leverage strong leadership qualities to inspire and motivate team members toward achieving collective goals, is a self-starter, and is willing to grow their skill set while actively improving our processes.
Previous hands-on experience in a prototype environment is required, and startup experience is a plus.
What You’ll Do:
- Liaison for the technician team, attend project management meetings and set priorities for the technician team.
- Manage Jira ticketing system while researching other viable solutions to prioritize the requests of our engineers efficiently.
- Manage up to 4 prototype technicians' workflow, operations, and processes.
- Assemble, rework, debug, maintain, and test new designs of machines that perform complex automated manufacturing processes.
- Provide timely and insightful feedback to the Engineering team iterating on the design of the machine.
- Modify or rework parts in our prototype shop, such as drilling, tapping, and building custom wire harnesses, and SMT soldering.
- Collaborate with Engineering to produce electromechanical assembly documentation and work instructions.
- Procure and maintain lab tools, machines, and equipment and help foster a clean, well-provisioned, safe, and well-utilized engineering prototype lab.
- Approach all projects with a “whatever it takes” attitude, using your experience to fill in the gaps between where we are and where we want to be. The ability to adapt and pivot accordingly.
- Actively seek out areas for process improvement, scalability, and personal growth.
What You’ll Need:
- Manufacturing and project management experience.
- Proficiency in SMT soldering and rework. Along with proficiency in wire harness build.
- Experience managing technicians in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional hands-on hardware assembly skills in both mechanical and electrical systems, including small precision work and large-scale systems.
- Experience with debugging complex electromechanical systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- An eye for detail and organization.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills.
- Experience with Google Workspace, Bash, and Gitlab.
- Experience operating and remotely controlling benchtop lab electronics (multimeters, oscilloscopes, etc.)
- Basic metrology or inspection experience (e.g., using calipers, micrometers, multimeters, etc.).
- Cleanroom or chemical lab experience, along with schematics.
- Eagerness to learn and take on more responsibilities over time.
- Proficient in Gitlab, Github, Jira, or Asana.
Bonus Points:
- Experience operating lab metrology instruments.
- Experience with mill and lathe machines.
- Laser and optical system experience.
- Vacuum system experience.
- Mechanical design CAD experience.
- CNC programming and machining experience.
- Software literacy: the ability to use command line interfaces, read and understand automation device manuals, and debug software-controlled systems.
