The Opportunity
We are seeking an exceptional Vice President, Engineering to be part of our team shaping and supporting the MariaDB's technological direction, ensuring the efficient and secure operation of its products, and contributing to overall business success through strategic and technical leadership. This role will oversee the entire software development process, aligning it with the company’s goals, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality products. The Vice President, Engineering will be crucial in creating the IT strategy and technology roadmaps, in working collaboratively with other functions to establish an understanding of business goals and where technology can support success.
What you’ll do:
- Participate in strategic planning sessions to align technical initiatives with business objectives.
- Provide all executive decisions with regard to the technological interests MariaDB.
- Responsible for outlining the company's technological vision, implementing technology strategies, and ensuring that the technological resources are aligned with the company's business needs.
- Lead the technical architecture effort for all of the MariaDB product lines
- Oversee the architecture and design of relational databases, NoSQL databases, vector databases, OLAP, and OLTP systems
- Ensure the scalability, performance, and reliability of the database systems
- Implement best practices in software development, testing, and project management
What You’ll need:
- 10+ years experience as a software/systems engineer in C/C++ and Rust
- Competence in database architectures, especially MariaDB/MySQL, PostgresSQL, Oracle and DB2 is essential
- Strong understanding of various database models including relational, graph, vector, and NoSQL
- Hands-on experience as a database developer and/or administrator is a must – from initial logical design to physical deployment, for both new build and change management
- Working experience with Data Management and Governance solutions (i.e. Data Warehousing, Data Lakes and Reservoirs) in both relational technologies and no-SQL solutions (MongoDB, CouchDB, and Redis) for both on-prem and cloud deployments required
- Experience creating and supporting enterprise-level big data platform architecture
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science or similar technical discipline
- Experience with AWS, GCP and Azure infrastructure is preferred
Soft Skills:
- Team-oriented, with proven ability to work well and collaborate globally across multiple and disparate teams
- Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between engineering, QA, and project management teams
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture within the team.
- Communicate technical strategies and progress to stakeholders, including the board, executive team and investors.
- Translate complex technical concepts into business terms for non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills for interacting and collaborating with other leaders and associates throughout the organization
