This role combines technical engineering expertise, project management, and client consulting to address construction defect cases, property liability, compliance assessments, and post-damage evaluations. Engineers in this role assess support systems, design structures and foundations, and develop practical solutions for field construction challenges such as rigging and lifting. Tasks include performing consulting and loss investigations, engineering analysis, and engineering calculations. The engineer delivers findings through technical reports, client presentations, and, if needed, sworn expert testimony.
Key Responsibilities:
Client and Project Development:
- Cultivate relationships with local clients and develop projects by collaborating with ESi consulting engineering teams across offices.
- Engage directly with clients to review project proposals and determine requirements, including tasks, schedules, budgets, and project-specific procedures.
- Assess project feasibility, making recommendations to clients and Practice Directors about accepting or declining new projects based on scope, resources, and timelines.
- Communicate project progress and, where necessary, suggest adjustments to scope, budget, or schedule to align with client needs or project developments.
Project and Field Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough field inspections across various structures, including residential, commercial, industrial, marine, and transportation sectors, to determine causes of reported damage, origin of issues, and structural integrity.
- Carry out structural assessments and condition analyses, developing practical repair options where needed.
- Perform structural analysis on temporary support systems and design plans for structures and foundations.
- Design detailed rigging and lifting plans, lifting frames, and coordinate construction methods directly in the field to support safe and efficient project execution.
- Draft, review, and finalize technical reports for clients, ensuring clarity and technical accuracy; confer with project staff to resolve engineering and operational issues as they arise.
- When assigned as project lead, coordinate project personnel activities to meet deadlines and stay within budget, overseeing tasks performed by other consultants, staff engineers, and technologists.
- Provide necessary project deliverables on time and as required for project to meet schedule.
Legal and Reporting Expertise:
- Prepare technical reports to document findings, methodologies, and recommendations for clients, especially when addressing dispute resolutions and insurance claims.
- Testify as an expert witness in depositions and trials, presenting technical findings and supporting exhibits or assist in preparing other experts for testimony.
- Draft project-related proposals and agreements, defining scope, required deliverables, timelines, and estimated budgets, with the flexibility to adapt project requirements as conditions or client needs change.
Professional Development and Outreach:
- Mentor junior consultants, providing guidance on technical skills, industry knowledge, and client interaction to support their professional growth and project contributions.
- Actively engage in marketing and business development by identifying potential clients, attending industry conferences, delivering presentations, and representing ESi to expand the client base.
- Participate in professional presentations, both in client-specific settings and at technical conferences, to showcase ESi’s expertise and engineering solutions.
- Contribute to the broader ESi practice by performing other tasks as directed, such as assisting with artifact handling, maintaining office or lab facilities, and addressing day-to-day office needs.
Education Requirements:
- Structural / Architectural Engineering degree from ABET accredited educational institution, BS (MS preferred) degree, or equivalent non-US accomplishments.
- PE License required, SE license preferred.
Experience Requirements:
- 7-10 years’ experience in structural engineering.
- Experience and familiarity in inspection and engineering of residential, commercial and industrial facilities.
- Structural inspection and condition assessment experience preferred.
Computer Skills:
- Must be agile in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and other modules appropriate to the practice.
- Must have some computer graphics skills, and CAD capability is a plus.
- Must be able to do fieldwork using test equipment commonly used in the area of expertise.
