Position Summary:


The Laboratory Operations Manager will support the R&D department by creating, maintaining  and managing high functioning laboratories. The primary responsibilities of the Laboratory Operations Manager will be to build and oversee efficient laboratory management and operations that allow researchers to seamlessly execute experiments and projects.


Primary Responsibilities:



  • Work closely with all R&D teams and counterparts in the R&D Operations team to ensure the necessary environment, facilities, materials, and equipment for performing R&D projects

  • Work primarily with the R&D Laboratory Operations team and outside vendors to plan and perform duties in the areas of EHS, Facilities, Equipment and Procurement

  • Ensure day-to-day operations of R&D laboratories inclusive of equipment maintenance, inventory management, safety and facilities

  • Ensure laboratory follows environmental and safety guidelines

  • Analyze and report monthly on key performance indicators as it pertains to R&D EHS, Facilities, Equipment, and Procurement

  • Plan and forecast consumption levels of reagents and consumables based on current and upcoming project load to prevent redundant ordering and limit waste/scrap

  • Provide updates and logistical oversight on sample procurement

  • Compile, analyze and forecast spendings and trends

  • Collaborate with the Facilities to ensure that the R&D team has the infrastructure required to be successful

  • Collaborate with the facilities team for space planning, layout, and placement of laboratory equipment and supplies in order to optimize workflow

  • Assess, make suggestions, and optimize laboratory workflow and logistics to improve department and laboratory efficiency and productivity

  • Write, review and implement SOPs for laboratory operations and management

  • Identify, propose and implement changes/modifications to documentation systems and procedures that improve operational efficiency and compliance

  • Ensure that R&D labs are following relevant GxPs and CLIA practices

  • Develop and implement tools for efficient use of high capital expense equipment

  • Ensure equipment service contracts are in place

  • Coordinate and participate in instrument/operation/performance qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ), calibration, cleaning, standardization and preventative maintenance activities as needed

  • Performs other tasks as specified by the director of the R&D Laboratory Operations

Qualifications:



  • BS or BA in science, engineering, business or related field

  • Seven plus years of combined experience in areas of lab operations, scientific research, EHS QA/QC, facilities and/or general management 

  • Minimum of 5 years of previous laboratory management experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of people management experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Working knowledge of EHS and OSHA regulations and policies

  • Working knowledge of GxPs

  • Proficient in basic molecular biology techniques

  • Experience operating PCR instruments, NGS platforms, Liquid Handlers, etc.

  • Ability to do basic drafting and design in AutoCad or other space planning software

  • Excellent computer skills. Ability to write basic programming scripts is a plus

  • Proficient with Google Workspace applications

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast paced and dynamic work environment

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and organizational and leadership skills

  • Great attention to details

  • Self-motivated

  • Team  player

  • Ability to optimize workflows by identifying and eliminate redundancies

  • Ability to think creatively and analytically with exceptional level of organization, time management, problem solving, and reliability

Physical Demands and Work Environment:



  • Duties are typically performed in an office setting

  • This position requires the ability to use a computer keyboard, communicate over the telephone and read printed material

  • Duties may require working outside normal working hours (evenings and weekends) at times

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.San Carlos, CA $109,700—$137,200 USD
