Overview The Sterilization Technician provides sterilization of dental instruments and trays including sorting, cleaning, and decontaminating instruments following standard procedures and techniques. The technician is responsible for inventory control and maintenance, environmental maintenance checks, and may clean or prepare operatories. They also provide clerical duties, including, but not limited to maintaining adequate supplies.Key Role Responsibilities 

  • Assists the dental and medical clinics with maintaining infection control according to CDC, OSHA and Joint Commission requirements. Demonstrates current knowledge of dental instrument and machine maintenance by keeping accurate maintenance logs.
  • Sterilizes instruments and trays; assembles, wraps, decontaminates, and sterilizes trays of instruments, supplies, and equipment following proper standard precautions in decontamination and sterilization areas; monitors biological and chemical wash solutions to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment; restocks, labels, collects, and distributes instruments and trays; sorts and makes equipment and instruments available for use; inspects instruments, verifies that instruments function properly, and removes defective instruments.
  • Performs environmental maintenance duties; assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, clinic areas, and equipment storage; performs maintenance checks, documentation, and services on sterilization equipment; monitors issues with autoclave function or outcomes of biological testing.
  • Chair-side assisting for dental procedures including hygiene as needed.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills 

Formal Education and Training 


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Current Maryland licensure as a Dental Assistant preferred, however would welcome candidates currently completing a Dental Assistant program 

Experience 


  • At least one year experience in a dental setting
  • Experience in a community health center or primary care setting preferred

Skills 


  • Strong organizational skills necessary to assure smooth operations of the clinic
  • Able to maintain confidentiality surrounding all information related to clients served by the clinic
  • Able to cope with interruptions, be flexible, and be a team player
  • Able to work with ill, disabled, emotionally upset and sometimes hostile individuals

We depend upon private contributions to cover a substantial portion of our annual budget. With help from our individual supporters, we provided comprehensive services to over 8,500 men, women and children last year. Your contribution goes a long way. Resources obtained through private donations helps meet a range of needs including much needed medication, medical supplies, transportation, clothing, food, and emergency care for people with disabilities.
