We are looking for an experienced Assistant Controller to join our team locally in Scottsdale, AZ. This role is a hybrid position requiring in-office work three days per week.
The Assistant Controller will have primary responsibility for all aspects of the financial closing process and assist in financial reporting for all hospitality properties and related Caliber Hospitality Trust entities. This role is accountable for ensuring accuracy related to balance sheets, financial statements, cash flows and retained earnings. The ideal candidate is a results-oriented leader, with proven ability to grow and cultivate high-performing teams to achieve sustained excellence and scalability.
You possess a deep understanding of industry best practices, and continuously seek to streamline and improve accounting processes. You are comfortable working with limited direction in a fast-paced environment and collaborate well with FP&A and other internal leadership. This role also provides coaching and mentorship for other members of the accounting and finance team.
Essential Functions for this Role:
- Mentor, coach, and develop the team; define and align team goals with company priorities and values; build morale and motivation. Hold self and team accountable to maintaining established company standards.
- Be responsible for day-to-day operational accounting, general ledger and consolidation activities.
- Lead all aspects of financial close; maintain a comprehensive close checklist reflective of all close tasks, manage the close calendar, oversee the completion of all close tasks on time and without error, resolve issues timely and in advance of close where possible, identify inefficiencies and implement solutions to improve close process, hold yourself accountable and individual team members accountable to assigned close tasks.
- Manage the on-boarding and integration of all contributed hotels to Caliber Hospitality Trust to ensure that all hotels are operating under similar accounting standards and close cycles. Identify all material GAAP differences and departures.
- Develop repeatable and scalable checks and balances over financial statement accounts and individual transactions to ensure issues identified and resolved timely.
- Deliver timely, complete and accurate internal financial reporting; own the monthly reporting package.
- Lead the design, implementation and documentation of scalable processes and controls; partner with financial reporting and technical accounting team to create or update accounting policies to ensure consistency with US GAAP and SEC reporting.
- Develop and maintain communication channels and processes with other business teams and leaders to ensure business activities are communicated timely to the accounting team, to ensure matters are assessed and accounted for accurately and within the correct period.
- Be a Sage Intacct guru; drive process improvement and automation efforts to streamline accounting operations.
- Work with cross functional teams to identify problems, process gaps and propose reasonable and creative solutions to improve processes including opportunities for automating manual processes.
- Act as a key liaison to external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits.
- Assist with other projects and duties as appropriate such as post-acquisition integrations, etc.
Ideal Qualifications Include:
- 7+ years of relevant accounting experience across public accounting and industry experience.
- 4+ years of progressive management experience; strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and develop others, and motivate teams to produce quality work with tight timeframes.
- CPA or equivalent preferred.
- Extensive experience in leading financial close process and related financial reporting activities.
- Strong analytical skills, efficient and self-motivated with the ability to recommend, develop, document and implement process improvements across the organization
- Strong accounting research and technical problem solving skills. Public company experience a plus
- Excellent communication, collaborative skills and ability to partner with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to prioritize workloads, tasks, meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities in a dynamic and growth environment.
- Ability to partner with cross-functional groups and leaders to drive and influence business solutions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to use best judgement to work through challenges
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under deadline pressure
- Ability to adapt to processes and deal with ambiguity
- Clear, effective oral and written communication skills are required, must be careful listener and clear communicator.
