Our roasting platform allows Bellwether customers to easily and responsibly source green coffee from incredible coffee farms around the world, expertly roast using artisan-crafted roast profiles, and share fresh, delicious coffee!About the RoleThe Head Roaster oversees all aspects of roasted coffee quality, creates and manages roast profiles, and supports the launch of new coffee products.
This role collaborates with R&D on product testing and development. The Head Roaster also works closely with Sales and Customer Success, leading customer consultations, tastings and demos. This role reports to the Sr. Director of Coffee Operations.LocationThe role requires full-time on-site presence in Berkeley.Primary Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of roasted coffee quality
- Design, approve and manage roast profiles for coffees in the Bellwether green coffee marketplace
- Design and execute test plans related to new software and hardware products being developed by Bellwether’s R&D team
- Lead creation of new roast profiles in response to changes in roaster technology
- Meticulous recording and sharing of quality data (qualitative and quantitative)
- Design and oversee experimental roast profiles and lead QA of results
- Lead regular cuppings with Coffee Team
- Manage analysis of roasted and green coffee samples using Bellwether’s lab (Agtron, moisture meter, screens, sample roaster, etc).
- Execute launch of new coffees in the marketplace in partnership with Sr. Director of Coffee Operations and Green Coffee Buyer
- Support Sales and Customer Experience teams with cuppings, demos, and on-site customer visits
- Lead Coffee Consultations with Bellwether customers
- Oversee fulfillment of roasted coffee samples
- Perform regular maintenance on roaster and occasional repairs
Qualifications
- At least 5 years experience as a roaster, preferably in a head roaster role
- Experience roasting coffee in a variety of styles
- Skilled cupper, preferable with a Q grader license
- Familiarity with Agtron or other roast color analyzer
- Very detail-oriented and meticulous
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and cloud-based equivalents (e.g. Google Docs)
Preference will be given to those who
- Have experience roasting on a variety of coffee roasters
- Have experience analyzing data and translating information for use in product improvement
- Self-directing individuals with high problem-solving skills.
