The Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) performs a variety of laboratory and administrative tasks to support the clinical laboratory staff in the CLIA-certified CareDx laboratory. A CLA performs laboratory duties under direct and constant supervision of a licensed CLS or the Clinical Laboratory Manager (CLM) and/or designee, who provides specific instruction regarding how tasks are to be completed and defines the steps to be employed.

Clinical Laboratory Assistant (Tuesday through Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM and Saturday 9:00am - 5:30pm)


  • An AM shift Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) is primarily focused on accessioning: the data entry and quality check of patient and sample information in the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • A CLA also performs a variety of laboratory and administrative tasks to support the clinical laboratory staff in the CLIA-certified CareDx laboratory. 
  • A CLA performs laboratory duties under direct and constant supervision of a licensed CLS or the Clinical Laboratory Manager (CLM) and/or designee, who provides specific instruction regarding how tasks are to be completed and defines the steps to be employed.

Responsibilities:


Accessioning (>=60% of day)

  • Receive and record samples into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) to facilitate sample throughput.
  • Data entry of patient and customer data 
  • Post-accessioning quality checks of data entry and received documents

Lab Assistance (~40% of day)

  • Perform patient specimen processing under the direct and constant supervision of a licensed CLS.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks and setting up consumables in preparation of laboratory testing.
  • Assist the CLS in laboratory testing.
  • Perform instrument calibrations and maintenance.
  • Participate in materials management activities which includes tasks such as ordering, receiving, unpacking, documentation and labeling of consumables and reagents, and stocking work areas.
  • Perform testing for special research and development studies.

Other responsibilities:


  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities.
  • Perform data entry and maintain spreadsheets
  • Comply with CareDx quality control policies and document QC activities
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal health information (PHI).
  • Identify problems that may affect assigned duties, and following established protocols, correct problems or escalate to Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Laboratory Manager, or lab Director.
  • Document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Perform additional administrative duties and projects assigned by the Clinical Laboratory Manager.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory operations.

Qualifications:


  • AA degree required; BS/BA in a biology-related science is preferred
  • 1-3 years experience
  • Experience with accurate data entry of sensitive information in a mid to high throughput setting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to details
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with CareDx employees at all levels as well as customers and vendors
  • Meet requirements for California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Trainee license
  • Aptitude for performance of molecular testing techniques (PCR, real-time PCR, etc.)
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing, within the work group
