Environmental, Health and Safety Engineer

Atomic MachinesBerkeley, California, United StatesOnsite
Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out.  The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About This Role:

We are looking for an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Engineer to support and enhance our EHS operations. You will be responsible for improving EHS practices, ensuring regulatory compliance, and contributing to the safe operation of all Atomic Machines facilities. This role is based in our Berkeley office, with occasional travel to our Santa Clara office.

What you will do:

  • Promote a strong safety culture by interacting with employees through safety orientations, safety training, safety committee meetings, and supporting safety recognition systems.
  • Ensure that the EHS policy is communicated, and all employees are properly trained on its content and supporting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with EHS procedures, including Safety Training, Injury and Illness Prevention Programs (IIPP), Emergency Action/Response Plans, Fire Prevention, Machine Safety, Lock Out Tag Out, Hazardous Materials, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Inspections, Audits, and Records.
  • Plan, develop, and implement safety training programs.
  • Conduct hazard analysis for the company and ensure that analyses are performed before new work begins or new processes are developed.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop hazard mitigation strategies based on first principles for the technology Atomic Machines is developing.
  • Stay current with legislative and regulatory EHS developments to ensure compliance with evolving requirements.
  • Contribute to safety specifications for engineering teams to meet safety objectives.
  • Maintain an issue reporting system and ensure root cause analysis and timely resolution of flagged risks or safety incidents.
  • Perform regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with applicable safety standards.
  • Establish targets and monitoring frameworks to minimize EHS hazards and risks, reporting progress on these metrics.
  • Interface with external parties during audits or incident response.
  • Ensure accurate EHS records are maintained in an audit-ready state.
  • Ensure that appropriate incident response plans and training programs are in place.

What you’ll need:

  • 6+ years of experience working with EHS programs and safety regulations.
  • Bachelor of Science in EHS, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Understanding of the hazards of ionizing radiation (including x-rays) and how to mitigate them.
  • Experience as Laser Safety Officer (LSO) for Class 4 laser safety practices and requirements.
  • Expertise in hazardous materials, including handling, storage, and disposal.
  • Experience in managing hazards related to high voltages or currents.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to our business.
  • Expertise in complying with California environmental regulations.
  • Robotics safety and machine shop safety experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing environments with familiarity in manufacturing processes.
  • Training in incident investigation from a reputable training body.
  • Ability to shift between strategic and tactical activities with a hands-on approach.

Bonus Points:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). First Aid, CPR, AED certification.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and OSHA certification preferred.
  • Emergency management certification preferred.

Life at Atomic Machines

Atomic Machines is redefining humanity’s relationship with matter. We see a future where our tools will allow us to reorganize matter at the atomic level at will, where we will go from bits to atoms for any object or machine that can be designed in alignment with physical laws. We have begun our journey with the development of a robotic manufacturing platform capable of making an entirely new class of micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices. We are well funded and have exceptionally strong product/market fit and a clear go-to-market path for the device we will make first with our platform. Our platform breaks traditional manufacturing paradigms and constraints, enabling inexpensive rapid prototyping as well as large scale manufacturing with highly compelling economics. \n\nJoining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team working on a massive world-changing mission. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its early days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.
