Senior Mechanical Engineer

GridwareOnsite

Description

Gridware exists to enhance and protect the mother of all networks: the electrical grid. The grid touches everything, and when grinds to a halt the consequences can be dire: wildfires burn, land is destroyed, property is damaged, progress stops, and lives are lost.  Our team engineers an advanced sensing system to continuously analyze both the electrical and mechanical behavior of grid assets. Utilizing high precision sensor arrays, the system identifies and allows preemptive mitigation of faults.

Our technology has been proven with utilities to bolster safety, reliability, and reduce customer outage durations. The demand for power will only increase. We protect the grid of today while we build the grid of tomorrow. Gridware is privately held and backed by the best climate-tech and Silicon Valley investors. We are headquartered in San Francisco, CA.

Team Overview

The Hardware Engineering team is responsible for designing and testing all of our devices, from mechanicals and electronics to the firmware and protocols they run. Our devices save lives, but doing this means supporting a diverse set of continuously-sampling sensors and we need tens of thousands of units to run super-reliably for 10 years in extremely challenging environments, ranging from snowy mountaintops to forests and deserts.

Role Description

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will, as a starting point, be responsible for the following:

  • Design and develop mechanical components and systems, ensuring they meet performance, reliability, and safety standards.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical and software engineering, to integrate designs into complete systems.

  • Conduct simulations, prototyping, and testing to validate designs.

  • Oversee manufacturing processes and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the product design and development processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in a startup or technology-driven environment.

  • Proficiency in CAD software (ideally SolidWorks) and simulation tools (e.g., FEA, CFD).

  • Strong in design for mass manufacturing of plastic and sheet metal components

  • Strong knowledge GD&T principles, mechanical QA and tolerance stackup analysis

  • Experience designing for outdoor environments, dealing with waterproofing, wide temperature ranges, high humidities, freeze-thaw and similar challenges.

  • Strong knowledge of materials science, manufacturing processes, and DFM/DFA principles.

  • Experience with hands on prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

  • Familiarity with industry standards and compliance requirements.

Bonus Skills

  • Familiarity with IoT systems or integrating mechanical designs with embedded hardware.

  • Understanding of environmental testing (e.g., vibration, shock, temperature cycling).

  • Background in sustainability-focused design or materials selection.

  • Experience defining/challenging product requirements

  • Thermal modeling experience

  • Experience with opto-mechanical components and assemblies

Benefits

  • Health, Dental & Vision (Gold and Platinum with some providers plans fully covered)

  • Paid parental leave

  • Every Other Monday, off

  • “Off the Grid”, a two week per year paid break for all employees.

  • Commuter allowance

  • Company-paid training
