FPGA Embedded Software Engineer

Houston Texas, Onsite

About Intuitive Machines

Intuitive Machines is an innovative and cutting-edge space company making cislunar space accessible to both public and private customers. Our mission is to further science and exploration, communications, and economic progress from the Earth to the Moon and beyond. With the first commercial lunar landing in history, multiple NASA lunar missions in development, and additional private missions on our manifest, we pride ourselves in supporting our customers and the nation in paving the way to return humans to the surface of the Moon.

Our world-class team includes experts in all aspects of spacecraft subsystems design, development, and test, on-orbit operations, and safety.

About The Position

As an FPGA Embedded Engineer, you will design, develop, and verify FPGA-based solutions for space, defense, and robotic systems. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the delivery of reliable, high-performance embedded systems that meet mission-critical requirements. You will also contribute to Flight Software development.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and test FPGA designs using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
  • Architect and optimize high-speed digital designs for real-time data processing and control.
  • Design, implement and maintain embedded flight software features and improvements
  • Perform simulation, timing analysis, and debugging of FPGA designs using tools such as ModelSim, Vivado, or Quartus Prime.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate FPGA designs into embedded systems.
  • Work with high-speed communication protocols such as PCIe, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, and AXI.
  • Ensure compliance with industry and mission-specific standards (e.g., radiation-hardened designs for space systems).
  • Document FPGA designs and workflows, including block diagrams, timing diagrams, and test plans.
  • Support hardware bring-up, system-level testing, and validation in laboratory and field environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve performance, power, and thermal issues in FPGA systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in  a mixture of FPGA design, preferably in space, defense, or robotics industries as well as software engineering using C/C++.
  • Proficiency in HDL languages (VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog) and FPGA development tools.
  • Experience with high-speed digital design and embedded system integration.
  • Strong understanding of FPGA architecture and design workflows, including simulation, synthesis, and timing closure.
  • Experience with debugging tools such as logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with space-grade FPGAs (e.g., Xilinx Virtex, Microchip RTG4, NanoXplore).
  • Experience with radiometric systems
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for FPGA algorithm development.
  • Security clearance or eligibility for clearance (for DoD projects).

Life at Intuitive Machines

Intuitive Engineering Solutions. We develop engineering solutions at the unimagined intersections between energy, medicine and aerospace. By leveraging state-of-the-art engineering tools and practices, integrated with current research and advanced technologies we arrive at original outcomes. We improve on the equivalent of machine nervous systems, brain control functions, and sensory perception; from sensing and analyzing the world around them to autonomously controlling their movements and interactions. We connect machines to humans through smart data display and control interfaces making both operator action and machine performance more intuitive. As an engineering design and development think tank, we provide products and solutions that employ a “flight proven” lean engineering development model. Our rapid iterative design-build-test capability significantly lowers development costs, and shortens the development cycle, while increasing the probability of success of any project. Solving Problems Together.
