VELCO’s Advancing Grid Intelligence through Learning Experiences (AGILE) Program is a summer internship opportunity for undergraduate and graduate college students. Based on principles of agile project management, AGILE Interns will make meaningful and tangible contributions to VELCO’s strategic projects to protect reliability and affordability of the transmission system.

How you will make an impact


AGILE Interns will be assigned to one department and complete interdisciplinary projects. AGILE Interns will participate in inter-departmental “scrum” meetings throughout the summer to coordinate and align their respective projects with the requirements of multiple technical stakeholders. Based on department and objectives, the daily work will vary. Examples include:

  • Support building commissioning criteria, data sharing process, and database design for cutting edge operations, planning, and engineering data analytics tools
  • Become familiar with the sources of planning and modeling data
  • Conduct research and analysis to understand how the system is or will be affected by intermittent, weather-dependent, and behind-the-meter resources
  • Support the development, integration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of applications that improve overall system reliability and environmental sustainability
  • Support change management process, procedures, templates, database structure and schema
  • Contribute to the improvement of procedures and templates
  • Become familiar with the sources of operations, planning, engineering, and asset maintenance data
  • Support engineering disciplines by utilizing technologies and tools to improve overall system reliability
  • Become familiar with the sources of near-real time data and high-fidelity event analysis data, the protocols used, and the data-communication transport architecture
  • Support control center operations by utilizing technologies and strategies to improve overall system reliability

Who you are


Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Computer Science, or a related field. Preference will be given to students who have accumulated two years of pertinent part-time experience. Participants with open-mindedness, attention to detail, and excitement about gaining new insights every day will thrive in this innovative, fast-paced learning experience.Knowledge/Skills

  • Familiarity with electrical engineering, computer science, data science, operations research concepts
  • Experience with programming languages such as SQL or Python
  • Strong technical skills and ability to troubleshoot computer hardware and software issues
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and relational databases
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • Open-mindedness, strong communication and problem-solving skills
