Tax Accountant

The Tax Accountant will provide tax accounting and compliance support to the consolidated group of companies. Responsibilities include preparing federal, state, and local income tax returns, as well as premium tax, sales/use tax and property tax filings, for Corporate and other business units. They are responsible for generating and analyzing financial and tax accounts, records and reports. Additionally, this person will research various tax issues and prepare memoranda for use by management. The individual will advise management regarding effects of business activities on taxes and strategies for minimizing tax liability as needed. They will also ensure compliance with periodic tax payments, information reporting, and various other tax matters; assist in preparation of tax reporting and disclosures required under NAIC statutory accounting principles; and respond to audit requests, including IRS, state & local, and insurance departments.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting or equivalent work experience.
  • 3 – 6 years of experience in corporate tax department and/or public accounting.
  • Experience preparing income tax provision and disclosures in accordance with ASC-740 and the SEC and/or Insurance or Financial Services background preferred.
  • CPA or CPA candidate.

Primary Job Functions:


  • Prepare federal, state, and local income tax returns for Corporate and other business units.
  • Generate and analyze financial and tax accounts, records and reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of income tax provision and disclosures in accordance with the guidance provided by ASC-740 and the SEC.
  • Prepare premium tax, sales/use tax and property tax filings as required.
  • Research various tax issues and prepare memoranda for use by management.
  • Assist the VP of Tax in advising management regarding effects of business activities on taxes and strategies for minimizing tax liability.
  • Ensure compliance with periodic tax payments, information reporting, and various other tax matters.
  • Assist in preparation of tax reporting and disclosures required under NAIC statutory accounting principles.
  • Respond to audit requests, including IRS, state & local and insurance departments.
  • Assist with special projects as needed.

Skills & Competencies Required:


  • Requires some knowledge of a specialized function or skill.
  • Developing real trade craft and skills.
  • Experience preparing income tax provision and disclosures in accordance with ASC-740 and the SEC.
  • Insurance or Financial Services background preferred.
  • Ability to research tax issues, advise management on effects of business activities on taxes and provide strategies for minimizing tax liability.
  • Very strong MS Office skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to commit to a hands-on, fast-paced work environment with the ability to meet regulatory deadlines.
