The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking highly skilled and motivated individuals with an interest in children’s mental health to join our team as interns for our Brave Buddies Program.Brave Buddies is an intensive group behavioral treatment program designed to help children with SM speak in school and other public places. Brave Buddies is offered as a weeklong session twice a year, and as one-day session multiple times throughout the year. Counselors for this program are trained using behavioral therapy skills to work with children with SM in challenging activities, prompting them to use verbal responses and speak spontaneously as they play with other children and adults.
Clinical Team Leads head a classroom, ensuring program activities run smoothly. Brave Buddies is offered as a multi-day session twice a year and as a one-day session multiple times throughout the year. The next Brave Buddies Program will be held Monday, August 4th through Friday, August 8th, 2025.Reporting to the Director, Selective Mutism Service, this is a non-exempt, part-time position, located on-site at Allen Stevenson School and our NYC headquarters office. Learning Opportunities:
- The Brave Buddies program provides a learning and training opportunity for individuals interested in children’s mental health, specifically in the field of selective mutism. They will gain experience by working directly with children with selective mutism. Program participants will be trained in the skills from Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM), an evidence-based treatment for SM, and are taught and coached to facilitate speech across various settings and activities.
Responsibilities:
- Assist program lead staff during counselor trainings and prep sessions.
- Lead classroom activities during Brave Buddies program including recreational activities/games, show and tell, expert demonstration and field trips.
- Use PCIT-SM skills and positive behavior management strategies to facilitate transitions and various daily activities during Brave Buddies
- Assist with developing individualized behavior plans and track progress over the program
- Review treatment goals throughout program
- Interface with families and clinicians, with the guidance of lead staff, to ensure coordination of care is optimized
- Receive daily clinical supervision with lead staff to develop individualized treatment goals and ensure classroom is run smoothly
Qualifications
:
- Pursuing or completed graduate-level study in clinical psychology, school psychology, mental health counseling, social work, speech/language pathology or related field of study.
- Prior experience in Child Mind Institute’s Brave Buddies program or similar group-based intensive treatment programs, or related programs is required.
- Experience leading groups in summer camps, after-school, sports, daycare, or educational programs.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt; ability to accept and utilize constructive feedback.
- Ability to commit to all dates of the program’s duration, as well as additional dates predetermined by lead staff. Clinical Team Leaders are required to attend the full program
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to maintain discretion and integrity at all times
- Clinical Team Leads must be available for all training, preparation meetings and program dates.
