Position Details:
The Child Mind Institute is looking for accomplished and motivated individuals to join our team as Counselors for our Brave Buddies Program for children with selective mutism (SM) who have difficulty speaking in school and other public places. SM is an anxiety disorder characterized by a child’s inability to speak in some social situations despite being able to speak fluently when comfortable. Brave Buddies is an innovative program that helps children with SM overcome their symptoms using state of the art evidence-based behavioral interventions.Reporting to the Director, Selective Mutism Service, this is an unpaid, temporary, full-time, internship located on-site at Allen Stevenson School (132 East 78th Street, New York, NY 10075) and our NYC headquarters office.This is a highly competitive unpaid internship.
Therefore, we strongly encourage applicants to independently investigate stipend programs through their college placement offices and to pursue college study credits for this experience. We can provide any requested documentation to assist students in getting stipends and college credit.
You Will:
- The Brave Buddies program provides a learning and training opportunity for individuals interested in children’s mental health, specifically in the field of selective mutism. They will gain experience by working directly with children with selective mutism. Program participants will be trained in the skills from Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM), an evidence-based treatment for SM, and are taught and coached to facilitate speech across various settings and activities.
- Program Interns will receive an initial 10-hour training that will cover the skills from Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) and their role in participating in Brave Buddies.
You Have:
- Prior experience working with children and/or in a clinical setting
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to maintain discretion and integrity at all times
- Participate fully in training and program and demonstrate the ability to use behavioral skills/tools learned to support patients
- Interns are required to attend all required training, preparation and program dates in person
