Product Engineer – Aerospace Materials Engineer
Job Description
The individual will prepare engineering data for replacement aircraft parts using reverse engineering practices in accordance with FAA AC 21.303-4. They ensure that design features, materials and processing are consistent with the functional performance and safety requirements for its aircraft system installation and within standard manufacturing practices. They will also build certification documents to show compliance with requirements for Test & Computation PMA (Parts Manufacturing Approval). They will actively coordinate with internal and external resources to shape decision making (ex.
Business development, project managers, manufacturers, technicians, FAA DER and engineers).
Essential Responsibilities
- Coordinate materials analysis with independent laboratories and review findings to make material and process recommendations on engineering design
- Research part function, operating conditions, and failure modes (including criticality classification) to guide engineering decision making
- Draft sketches, models and drawings of parts and assemblies in SolidWorks
- Determine part tolerancing based on function, manufacturability and inspection then prepare production drawings using ANSI/ASME Y14.5 GD&T and internal standards
- Develop certification documents using FAA AC 21.303-4 guidelines and obtain FAA approval
- Provide engineering support for sales, procurement, manufacturing, and receiving
Experience and Skills
- Experience interpreting lab data and reports (commonly metallic or polymeric materials)
- Five years of relevant work experience (materials, design, certification, manufacturing)
- CAD/3D modeling design experience (SolidWorks preferred)
- Skilled in writing technical documents
- Detail oriented and highly organized
- Familiarity with aerospace specifications and processes preferred
- Demonstrated general knowledge of drafting standards and GD&T preferred
- Experience with aircraft components and systems is strongly preferred
- Shop time or other hands-on experience is preferred
Education
Bachelor's degree in engineering (materials or mechanical)
