Chief Engineer – Data Center Operations, Chicago, IL
The Chief Engineer will be responsible for overall site management and maintenance, client reporting, staff availability, emergency response coordination, incident and problem management, and participation in miscellaneous projects. They will work closely with the Senior Regional Director of Operations to maintain and support the dedicated power and cooling service level commitments for each of the designated data center facilities. This role is based in the Elk Grove Village are of Chicago, and requires at least days onsite.
Primary Responsibilities
Monitor, maintain and operate all on-site mission critical equipment within SOP and EOP functionality including:
- Primary Switch Gear
- Medium Voltage Gear
- Distributed Switch Gear
- Automatic and Static Transfer Switches
- Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS)
- Diesel Generators
- Power Distribution Units (PDU’s)
- Remote Power Panels (RPP’s)
- Main and sub breakers
- HVAC, CRAC and mini-mate cooling units
- Fire and Life Safety systems
Creating, managing, and executing standard Method of Procedures (MOP)Support the Regional Director in implementing and managing the Preventative Maintenance program for the designated siteWork with our computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and other monitoring systems to ensure they are current and contain accurate information for all critical componentsIdentify areas of improvement within the existing environment, particularly in the areas of efficiency and utilization (PUE)Effectively manage, supervise, and evaluate contract technical labor teamEnsure compliance with all safety procedures as well as utilization of protective equipmentMaintain ongoing communications with tenant/s and vendorsAssist in updating and/or maintaining as-built drawingsEnsure compliance with applicable codes, requisitions, government agencies and EdgeConneX directives as it relates to building operationsParticipate in on-call rotation when needed to cover evening and weekend incidentsProvide 1-hour response time for high priority incidentsRespond quickly and accordingly to all customer concerns
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to operate, manage, and maintain critical electrical, mechanical, and fire and life safety systems
- Comprehend, analyze and interrupt complex project documents, including AutoCAD, Visio and PDF documents
- Vendor Management
- Knowledge and capability of processing work orders, tickets, schedules and inventory within a formalized ticket management system
- Knowledge of an automated building management system
- Strong written and verbal communication
Education/Experience
- 10 plus years of operations in a mission critical environment with superior communication and client management skills
- Direct experience in working within an enterprise or hyperscale data center from a MEP standpoint
Prior experience with the following:
- Emerson-Liebert power and mechanical equipment
- Square D switchgear
- MTU, Caterpillar, or Cummins generators
- Fire and Life safety system
Expertise in creating, updating, and following MOPs and SOPs to support clients at the highest level of qualityExperience with leading and managing large sites in Incident, Problem, and Change Management ticketing system
Travel
This position will be located at the Chicago EdgeConneX Data Center facility however, regular travel (10%) will be required to manage additional Data Centers within the Region as well as for annual and quarterly company meetings.
