What’s the job all about?
The Law Clerk at Chandler is a dynamic, project-focused legal professional working on a part-time basis. This role is designed for a law student in the midst of their education, providing an opportunity to apply academic knowledge to practical legal challenges. The Law Clerk will engage in limited but crucial communication across departments, receive mentorship and professional development from the General Counsel, and contribute to key legal initiatives within the firm.
The essential functions of the role include:
- Conduct legal research, drafting legal memoranda, and assisting the General Counsel and other members of the company with legal issues faced by Chandler's business and operations units.
- Capture information across multiple states in response to regulatory changes impacting Chandler clients.
- Provide ad hoc support to the General Counsel including providing assistance with preparing reports and working on other project-related matters.
- Participate in working group meetings and supervised interactions with business clients.
- Support the drafting of proposed policies as part of policy implementation efforts.
- Review and communicate new regulatory activities, including code, rules, and laws, under the guidance and oversight of the General Counsel.
- Monitor business and financial industry news and current events.
Requirements
This Team Member will have:
- Education: Currently attending the 2nd or 3rd year of law school, with a focus on corporate, financial, or compliance law preferred.
- Industry Experience: Prior legal internship or clerical experience in a legal setting would be beneficial, but not required.
- Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively convey information, engage in legal discussions, and collaborate with the legal team.
- Research & Update: Capable of conducting thorough legal research and drafting summation memos on relevant rules and regulations. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis would be advantageous.
- Additional Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest in compliance, corporate governance, or investment law.
- Proficiency in legal writing and document drafting.
- Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Keen attention to detail and a high level of discretion due to the sensitive nature of legal work.
- Recommended coursework: Securities Regulation, Tax, Corporate Tax, Deals, M&A, Finance & Accounting for Lawyers, Corporations, Business Transactions, and/or Business Planning.
This is a paid externship offered through the Corporate Counsel Externship Program of USD School of Law. Students are required to enroll in this externship program.
