    At Smokeball, we believe there is nothing more powerful than a community of people coming together to work on a product that they, and our clients, love. When it comes to working as a community, we see the value in both coming together and allowing our “Smokeballers” the flexibility that remote work offers. All Chicago employees are in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays. While our office is open 5 days a week, we allow you to choose what works best for you on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Our office is in the heart of the Loop within 10 minutes of the Metra and all “EL” trains.

    The Role


    We are seeking a Senior Accountant to oversee the financial processes related to the Record-to-Report and Procure-to-Pay cycles in the Finance department. This role requires advanced knowledge of accounting principles, strong analytical skills, and the ability to lead month-end closing activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the accrual and deferral accounting concept, the ability to actively find and solve problems, and the ability to link company operations to financial outcomes.

    This person will report to the VP of Finance.

    This is a hybrid role with our office being in Chicago, IL. 


    Key Responsibilities


    • Running all weekly, monthly, and annual aspects of general accounting consisting of: the maintenance of the chart of accounts, journal entries, accruals, deferrals, account reconciliations and financial statement reporting.
    • Develop and support accounting procedures to obtain and maintain a 4-day month-end close.
    • Biweekly monitoring of payroll and headcount spend to assure the proper controls around payroll runs and budget adherence with staffing.  
    • Weekly management of company procurement processes to enforce company purchasing policies, support purchase orders, pay vendors and consistently record transactions to facilitate comparability across accounting periods.
    • Driving the company’s deployment and full adoption to RAMP.com for all purchasing needs, making sure company policies are written into the platform’s rules and routine high-volume work is automated.
    • Monitor and forecast vendor and employee payments to evaluate working capital needs and the company’s cashflows.
    • Presenting monthly functional spend to department leaders to drive more financial accountability to improve profitability.
    • Support compliance work with statutory authorities.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as defined by the company.

    What You Bring


    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Mathematics.
    • 3+ years of accounting, finance, or procurement experience.
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles.
    • Proficient in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, Rippling, RAMP, Salesforce); advanced Excel skills required.
    • Ability to work with large data sets and distill key information to repeatable outcomes.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving organization.
    • Ability to lead and collaborate in a fast-paced environment.

    Hi, I am Ben and I’ve worked at Smokeball for about 2 years. I oversee the North American Finance team and help tell the financial story of the company each month as well as guide the strategic decision making with in our region. Our team consists of 7 employees that are passionate about helping the company grow commercially and actively partner across the business to drive business decisions. I am a big believer in empowering staff to make decisions and bring their ideas to the table to assist the company.

    When I am not working I enjoy playing with my kids, reading and golfing.

    Hi, I’m Art! I’ve been with Smokeball for a over three years now and I’ve enjoyed my experience so much since joining the company. The finance team started off very small, with me being here in the US and the CFO, Mick Campbell, in Australia. Since then, we have doubled the finance team and are looking to add more teammates to help meet the demands of our clients. With our growing client base come new challenges – which we all get energy from! We have a collaborative team environment which not only aids in the business’ growth, but also for our own personal development.
