Role Summary:
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for managing the finance and accounting operations, including technical accounting and both internal and external reporting requirements. They will have primary responsibility for the timely and accurate reporting of all financial statements under U.S. GAAP and all federal, state and local filings. Other key responsibilities include treasury, audit management, FP&A support, stock plan administration and insurance/risk management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Key contributor in the monthly and quarterly accounting close, ensuring that deadlines are met for internal and external (SEC) reporting purposes. (as applicable). Prepare and post journal entries, preparation and review of reconciliations on general ledger accounts as part of the close process. In depth support over more complicated areas of the accounting close including stock-based compensation and clinical trial accruals. Analyze and provide commentary on the income statement and on the balance sheet, working with department managers to address any variances to plan.
- In collaboration with CFO and Director of Finance, prepare the Company’s annual operating budget, including monitoring and controlling the monthly results and periodic reforecasts
- Assist in the preparation of the Board of Director, and Audit Committee packages.
- Continuously review accounting policies, procedures and systems to ensure data accuracy, seek to upgrade accounting efficiencies and implementation of best practices, as well as focusing on scaling operations as the company grows. Developing and leveraging financial and business reporting systems to provide the division leadership with relevant and timely information to make informed business decisions.
- Key contributor in implementations and upgrades of new financial systems
- Responsible for the design and operation of internal controls, including SOX Compliance, as applicable. Establish compliance as a priority, with compliance oversight and enforcement. Develop internal control documentation including scoping assessments, process narratives and risk-control matrices.
- Oversee advance preparation for all audits. Serve as primary point of contact for external auditors, banks and government offices. Manage relationships with External Auditors and lead audit efforts
- Contribute to preparation of federal, state and local tax returns, and any tax provisions performed by external tax professionals. Ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
- Upon a public offering, lead, manage and monitor the quarterly and annual SEC reporting process, including the preparation and review of external SEC financial reporting process, ensuring that the following is completed:
- Creating and maintaining SEC calendar
- Preparing and publishing of the 10-Q, 10-K, 8-K and annual proxy statement fillings.
- Completing GAAP checklists and ensuring financial statements are presented in accordance with GAAP and SEC guidelines
- Ensuring appropriate XBRL tagging
- Managing internal and external review of all documents
- As necessary, utilize and research, all accounting literature, applying technical accounting standards as well as company policies to complex business issues and transactions. Prepare memorandums that document issues and conclusions in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner.
- Monitor industry trends and interpret the potential implications for the business.
- Ability to be a self-starter and manage priorities, including 10 day close requirements.
- Perform other duties and lead/complete projects as required.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- BA/BS Degree in Accounting/Finance and 7-10 years of senior-level accounting experience.
- CPA is required.
- Experience in life sciences industry required, with preference for late-stage clinical therapeutics
- Experience with Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) rules and regulations (US GAAP)
- In depth experience with ERPs, P2P and expense reporting systems
- Excellent interpersonal skills and problem solving/decision making skills.
- SEC/publicly traded company experience required.
- Budget development and management experience required.
- Demonstratable experience in managing external audit requirements and relationships.
- Demonstratable success in building cross-functional relationships, providing business support and fostering collaboration across the accounting team, as well as with other corporate functions to ensure targeted business results.
- Solid understanding of key financial and operational controls and the ability to promote a strong internal control environment throughout the organization, including experience with requirements of SOX.
- IPO experience a plus.
- Demonstratable ability to operate independently in an entrepreneurial environment
- Highly motivated, decisive, and results-oriented individual with the flexibility and creativity to excel in and contribute to a rapidly growing company.
- Advanced Microsoft Office computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
