Job Description
Title: Material Handler Team Lead
Reports To: Plant Manager
Job Purpose:
As the Material Handler Team Lead, you are ultimately responsible for overseeing day-to-day team activities in the department area, as well as coordinating a team of Makers to achieve departmental goals. You play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient flow of materials and products throughout the shipping process. Through operating material handling equipment, maintaining precise inventory records, and providing support to production activities, you facilitate the achievement of production goals, uphold inventory accuracy, and ensure prompt delivery of goods.
Responsibilities:
- Operate various material handling equipment, including forklifts and pallet jacks, to efficiently move and organize inventory within the facility.
- Supply production areas with required materials based on work orders, ensuring timely delivery to support production schedules.
- Unload incoming shipments, verify received raw materials against packing slips, and inspect for damage.
- Accurately update inventory records using computerized interfaces and devices.
- Conduct staging and shipping of outgoing transfers, ensuring compliance with transfer order documents.
- Assist in loading outgoing shipments, verifying materials against bill of lading specifications.
- Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections on all material handling equipment to ensure optimal functionality and safety.
- Support cycle counting and inventory audits by participating in the counting process, verifying inventory accuracy, and reconciling any discrepancies.
- Ensure all material handling activities adhere to established Material Handling Work Instructions.
- Occasionally drive for designated purposes.
- Maintain work areas according to 6S standards.
- Ensure timely and efficient delivery of packages to customers.
- Champions the QEK program by actively soliciting suggestions and helping team members implement product and process improvements.
- Champions the team’s safety program and complies with all safety practices and regulations.
- Lead, guide, mentor, and train Makers to ensure quality and timely production to scheduled activities within the department
- In coordination with the Supervisor, monitor and adjust workflow to facilitate timely start and completion of job operations to the ERP system master schedule
- Act as a resource to ensure communication and resolution of technical issues preventing successful execution of production activities as scheduled
- Participate in team efforts to maintain, update, or establish new process controls and procedures to achieve consistent results
- Provide input on Maker’s performance as part of the review and feedback loop and make recommendations on individual skill development plans
- Assist with Continuous Improvement projects and processes such as Kata walks, Quick and Easy Kaizen (QEK) program, scrap reduction, rework elimination, and increased metal removal rates
- Champion the area’s 6S program and audit completion of daily checklists to maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Using formal problem-solving tools, troubleshoot issues in real time and assist Makers with resolution or escalation in a timely manner to maintain productivity
- Coach and develop a team of problem solvers, focusing on prevention over detection
- Demonstrate leadership capabilities and exemplify the company’s core values
- Support other material handlers as backup and perform additional duties as required to meet production demands.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Clean driving record necessary.
- Print reading experience preferred
- Preferred experience in lean manufacturing and quality systems (ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, and AS9100D).
- Previous experience with standard shop tools and measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges) preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in inventory management and record-keeping.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment and prioritize tasks based on production schedules.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
- Proficient in using material handling equipment, including forklifts required.
- Attention to detail required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer literacy required and experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Excel) preferred.
