Senior RF Electronics Engineer

nou SystemsHuntsville, Alabama, United States | Marietta, Georgia, United StatesOnsite

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is here to solve diverse and challenging technical problems in an enjoyable, stimulating environment, while providing unsurpassed value to our customers.

We are pleased to announce the opening for a Senior RF Electronics Engineer who will join our Research and Development team in either Huntsville, Alabama or Marietta, Georgia. This is a great opportunity to become part of our innovative, rapidly growing, 100% employee-owned technology company that’s tackling the hardest problems in missile defense, signals and sensing, low-cost defense systems, algorithms and machine learning, test range modernization, and biotechnology. Here’s what you’ll be doing:You’ll be a critical member of a small, tight-knit team developing and exploiting new radar technologies, executing multiple proof-of-concept prototyping projects in quick succession.

This team is advancing multiple prototype radar technologies towards critical flight testing and ultimately fielding. You’ll be expected to lead the design, assembly, integration, and test of our best-in-class radar transmit arrays and receivers. This includes analog component selection and testing, custom PCB design and testing, and subsystem/system-level testing and troubleshooting with RF test equipment like vector network analyzers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators. As part of this process, you will become intimately familiar with (a) everything that goes into designing, testing, and fielding a modern high-performance radar; (b) intellectual property and how to protect it; and (c) interferometry. This position is considered a senior position.

You will need to be able to demonstrate an exceptional degree of technical ingenuity, intellectual curiosity, aptitude for building (as opposed to simply analyzing or theorizing), and intimate knowledge of high-frequency electronics (somewhere in the range of 2-25 GHz) and the equipment used to test them. Power amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, filters, frequency synthesizers, circulators, attenuators, and phase shifters are your bread and butter. You will be a self-starter capable of both identifying challenging tasks and quickly executing them. You’ll be able to demonstrate a history of seeking out, identifying, and capitalizing on learning opportunities. In short, nSI is searching for RF ‘Macgyvers’.Here's what you’ll need:

  • You must have a Bachelor’s degree at minimum in either Physics or Electrical Engineering, 10 years of direct experience with radar component / subsystem design is an acceptable substitute.
  • You must have demonstrated expertise and facility with RF test equipment (e.g. VNA, o-scope, spectrum analyzer, AWG).
  • Finally, you must be a U.S. citizen that possesses or has the ability to obtain an Secret Security Clearance.
  • Lacking any one of these disqualifies you from this job.

You also must have:

  • A high degree of technical competence in one or more of the following areas:

  • PCB, multi-chip module, or integrated microwave assembly design for RF systems
  • Transmitter and/or receiver design and testing
  • Implementation of non-standard DSP algorithms on FPGA or RFSoC/RFSoM
    • Outstanding demonstration of technical competence and ingenuity in one of the areas above [Must be able to lead an RF electronics design as part of a team]
    • Exceptional aptitude for building tangible products [Must be able to demonstrate this by a portfolio of work where you’ve gone down into the weeds, even if you can only openly discuss high-level concepts]
    • Strong intellectual curiosity [You will be asked to leave your comfort zone early and often, so we’re looking for evidence that you’ve done this on your own before]
    • Preference for self-directed work [You’ll work with our top technical talent, but we’re looking for evidence that when given a problem to solve, you know how to identify and execute the means for solving it]
    • Demonstrated history of effective collaboration [You’ll be working with multiple other people as part of an integrated team and must be capable of both shouldering work yourself and leading tasks when given high-level guidance. This implies other things like good communication, planning and coordination, and ‘soft’ skills]
    • Demonstrated desire to work at the cutting edge [That’s where you’ll be on this effort, and we want to make sure you’ll be happy there]

Other qualifications we hope you bring to the table:

    • M.S. or Ph.D in EE
    • Experience designing RF systems used on SWaP-C constrained interceptor platforms
    • Demonstrated ability to architect and rapidly execute proof-of-concept prototyping
    • Experience working in a startup environment
    • RF systems engineering expertise (the ‘why’ behind low-level radar requirements)
    • Experience testing RF systems in challenging field environments
