Who We Want:
We want a Senior Underwriter who reports to the Underwriting Manager and is responsible for the timely and accurate evaluation and approval/denial of loan applications in accordance with aggregator, investor, and program guidelines. This position underwrites large or more difficult/complex loans ensuring compliance with appropriate Homeowners and secondary market investor standards. The Senior Underwriter may provide training and direction to junior underwriters and production staff. The position has the authority to withdraw and decline loans as well as develop and recommend modifications to underwriting and production procedures.
Essential Duties:
- Phoenix-Metro area candidates will be required to work from the Corporate office in Scottsdale 2 days per week
- Utilizes knowledge and experience to serve as an advisor for junior members of the department
- Proactively suggests program alternatives for clients who do not qualify for terms initially submitted
- Demonstrates sound judgment in the analysis of required documentation with mitigating organization risk through appropriate decision-making
- Meets or exceeds productivity levels established by Management and credit quality standards set for by Homeowners
- Responds timely to post-close suspense’s and issues, quality control errors and audit reviews when requested
- May assist Underwriting Manager when necessary and assist with team member training
- Acts as a resource for operations and sales colleagues regarding specific product requirements for loans in process
- Coaches Processors, LMPs, Underwriters, and Jr. Underwriters when appropriate and works with them to find solutions to problems when possible
- Communicates effectively and engages proactively with LMPs, processors, branch managers, funders, and post-closers regarding loan decisions, assignment of loan conditions, investor guidelines/documentation requirements and possible loan scenarios
- Assesses the risk of a loan and makes an approval or decline decision based on the quality of the data in the loan file
- Analyzes and verifies the employment profile, credit strength, property characteristics, and all other information pertinent to the credit decision process on each loan application
- Ensures an investment quality loan product and creditworthiness of the borrowers and acceptability of the collateral
- Identifies potential quality loans to be held in portfolio if secondary market guidelines cannot be met, escalates to management for review
- Applies all internal underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, and federal regulations to the decision process to ensure loan quality
- Participates in Homeowners internal meetings and required trainings
- Maintains a professional image and demonstrates an understanding of and follows all Homeowners Policies and Procedures

RequirementsQualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum 7 years of underwriting experience required
- FHA Direct Endorsement Underwriter Designation required and/or VA SAR
- Management or team leadership experience desired
- Appraisal and appraisal review experience required
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial data
- Excellent documentation and analytical skills required
- Proficient PC skills to include Excel, Word, and Microsoft Outlook
- Knowledge of investor and GS guidelines including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
- Experience with Desktop Underwriter (DU), Loan Product Advisor (LPA), Encompass and other major origination and underwriting systems preferred
- Working knowledge of mortgage origination process, FNMA, FHA, VA, RD, and SAFE Act guidelines
- Must be able to demonstrate established competency levels for all required regulatory or compliance-related processes and/or procedures within established timeframes of appointments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Working Conditions:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job may require handling objects up to 10 pounds frequently and 20 pounds occasionally. While performing the duties described herein, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel in addition to talking and hearing. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
