Summary of Responsibilities:
The Disability Specialist is responsible for the processing of SERS disability applications, re-applications and any occupation cases.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and process initial applications for disability.
- Counsel members regarding disability benefits.
- Process initial request for disability information.
- Review confidential medical reports and file electronically.
- Process re-examination – any occupation cases to determine if vocational evaluation is needed.
- Process survivor benefit applications.
- Back up SCP as needed.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Desired Educations, Skills, and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D;
- One to three years customer service or medical office experience and/or trainingpreferred;

- Ability to express empathy for others
- Ability to work with many people with different backgrounds
- Able to work independently with little oversight.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with members, retirees, employers, health care providers and fellow employees.

Working Conditions:
This role operates in a professional office environment and is subject to prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines and may need to be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Disability and Service Credit Purchase staff members are eligible to work remotely 2 days per week, after 30 days of employment. Remote working days are not guaranteed and subject to change based on organizational needs.
